Old Growth Dev-Log 1
Welcome!
Welcome to the first dev log of Old Growth. It is a horror strategy game in early development being made by a two person team. First I'll be going over the inspirations for the project, both mechanical and visual. Next discussing what is currently in the game, and finally the roadmap for future development.
Inspirations
Mechanics
Mechanically Old Growth pulls ideas from several table top games. Frostgrave has had the most impact on initial game systems but other games like DND and Warhammer have been influences as well. Its not just table top games, XCOM 2 and Final Fantasy Tactics have been impactful as well. Of course Old Growth is its own original project will have unique mechanics and not pull too heavily from existing games.
Visuals
Visually Old Growth pulls from eldritch horror and dark fantasy. Games like Darkest Dungeon and Path of Exile being some examples of art in the same genre. I am primarily an artist first and coder second so I am hoping to take Old Growth in a fairly new direction in terms of visual style. I picked pixel art because of the speed of asset creation and comfort with the medium. Hopefully the art can speak for itself.
Currently Done
The project is currently in very early development, that being said there are a number of systems already in game. Unit movement and attacks are done in a very bare bones state, fog of war should be fully functional, and various unit stats are implemented such as vision, speed, health, etc. There are some very basic options for music volume, fullscreen, and other boring stuff. Overall though it is in an extremely bare bones state.
Roadmap
While there are many things that need worked on the highest priority ones are getting a game over screen and win screen done as the current public build lacks those. I will also be adding in several new actions some exclusive to certain units like scouting, blocking, healing etc. Currently the two actions of move and attack don't offer a lot in terms of strategic planning. I have some visual things planned as well. The environment art needs quite a bit of work and new units need to be added. Lastly, in the future the game won't be a single map. I plan on having some meta progression with a town you can buy new units, equip items, and plan the next adventure.
Next post
There are some more complex topics that I am saving for future posts. There are also two full songs in game made by the other dev on this project. I won't go into detail here but I might have him type up some thoughts on his process if this post does well. Next, there is a pretty robust procedural generation system in the game already that I will cover eventually.
